Animation Tip: Fast Background Art
When the animating time is short it means it is time to get creative with the background art. We can't all be painterly Studio Ghibli or Pixar layout artists.
BigFish.tv animators, by all accounts from reliable sources, follow the philosophy espoused by Ian of, "Work hard, play hard." Not many animators have fuel left in the tank to animate outside of work. These local Brisbane animators let their pressure cooker release with eclectic soundtracks and a flood of crazy consciousness ideas. It's brain twisting gobbledeegook of the highest order. Not only do they animate outside of work time but they have created a whole online festival called Fest.
This example shows how using photographic backgrounds have given this animation an urban jungle feel. So, if it is all about character animation in your soul, then get creative and quick on your backgrounds with ideas like this.

Animatic ~ Jigsaw Falling Into Place ~ Radiohead
This week second year students were given a one week reprieve on the storyboard animatic deadline for their major project (due to the Institute's new Internet safety policy of banning the world wide web, which made it a bit difficult to access online resources).
Make like a slice of cheese... Now we're on a roll because we can improve our ideas after watching this excellent example animatic by local Brisbane animator Mark Osberg. "Ahhh Man, this is so good!"* Note at the start how we get a colour scheme idea but from that point onward we leave the more detailed layouts into the 'rough' art work that tells the story.
I know that Mark works rough using a graphics tablet straight into Flash. I'm pretty sure this is the approach most of the second years are taking as well. But we'll work from initial paper and pencil thumbnail roughs... or did we? Here's some extra storyboarding info for you, yeah you!

As is common knowledge in the animation industry, it is way cool to drive an Italian scooter to prospective job interviews (and not a Camaro Bumble Bee). This clever advertisement has just enough animation in it to warrant a post. And enough humour to make you think about buying that scooter.

In our 2nd year "Develop Industry Knowledge", affectionately known as the "DIK" class, the students were put to wondering, "What is the animation industry?" ,and "How do we find our way around in it?"
Maybe industry animators can help point us in the right direction, please?
So, as a fact finding mission and for fledgling animators that do not wish to fly to far from the nest, an animation industry map of south-east Queensland has been started and we're looking for more coloured pins to add to it.

BigFishTV - Fest - Phillip's Day Out
The Big Fish are Brisbane (Queensland, Australia) based. Like this'n here blog. So it's good to showcase some local talent.
The big question this most recent FEST animation puts might just be, Do pinball parlours still exist?
In finding out how to spell exist this is what the Macquarie Dictionary had to say: "2. to have life or animation; live."
We have animation. Thus we live. Thus we have a life. Thus we exist. Ergo, without animation nothing would exist. QED. (Yes, QED is in the dictionary).
Now, go and watch Phillip's Day Out. And make some dognam comments, dognam!
