Federico Vitali ~ Lava Lava & Guano

Federico Vitali is a French animator with a huge bestiary. And I mean Huge. You should check it out. I mean, "Hoo Wee, IT'S HUGE!"

How to make a huge bestiary

Draw 50 x 30 second* episodes of 2D traditional animation where pleasantly, horrible, appealing characters almost live through the most foolish adventures imaginable. ( based on a report in Animation Now! ) Name it Guano.

Also check out the character designs and animation in Vitali's Lava Lava animation series. (Warning: there is some nude buttocks in the Lava Lava series. Oh, and there's cartoon violins as well, so if you're a little kiddy or Zac, or Mitch, or Dan don't watch it).

Federico Vitali also worked with Bill Plympton on a short animated film called "Trashorama", which I can't find on the Internet.

SBIT students: How far can you take your character poses, designs and story ideas? I bet Ian would love to find out. I hear him often wandering around the studio, yawning, muttering, "These students are, by nature, soo conservative." Check out Pushing the Pose (take that Ian!)

... so I went to Victor Navone's blog to look for animating jumping tips and got distracted by this short clip.

Pay particular attention to the music and sound effects. Ooo, yeah!

BigFishTV FEST: Ducks

Feast your soul on a small duck.

These BigFish.TV animations may be challenging to interpret but, y'know, there's something in them. This time it's small ducks... and they're yellow.

Mr. Pipik certainly caused a storm of contoversy starring in 'Global Warming' a few weeks back. And I will always think carefully before eating cheese.

I particularly like the graphic design.

These are just hilarious - if you are a Don Hertzfeldt fan it's more than likely you'll love these 3 animations that he made especially for the Animation Show. Journey To The Disney Vault

Friend of the blog Kristi found this funny clip making fun of all those Disney sequels. Cuts especially close to the bone for Kristi and I because we worked on some of the sequels they are mocking, but there's no denying that Disney went overboard on the whole sequel thing. Its funny cus its true.

Here is a cool ad I found. It was posted on Dailymotion by someone in France but the voice over seems to have an Australian accent. Go figure. Anyway the animation is nice and toony.

Funny Dance

No animation, just a dance that I thought was really funny. It may come in handy for anyone looking for refrence material when they animate a character dancing. First year folk may wonder why they would you be animating a character dancing, BECAUSE I'M GOING TO MAKE YOU THATS WHY! BWWAAAA HA HA HAAAA!

Cane Toads

This film was made by a couple of local blokes, now one of them works at Wetta (Lord of the Rings/Godzilla) and the other at Animal Logic (Happy Feet). This would have been a huge amount of work, but having the initiative to knuckle under and produce that one great piece of animation can have a huge impact on your future...... hint hint hint (grin).

Motion Capture, How do they do it?

SBIT Friend Matt all the way over in San Fransisco sent me this funny little spoof about how they make those amazing things called cartoons. I hope your taking notes, its very technical. And while I'm at it I'll also include the reel from the animation mentor group that Matt was a part of last year. Something for this years 2nd year group to aspire to......... no pressure :)

OK so its Monday and I'm supposed to post about a blog, bet you were all keeping close track and planned to give me hell about that. Never rains but it pours.

After quite a break in the "free online 3D animation supply" I've become aware of a whole heap of postworthy stuff. I'll stick em up over the coming days.

I love how snappy this one is, there is some real punchy animation here, if you look closely you can see inbetweens that a all stretched out.

Fetch

Check this out! Its a great example of how you can reuse bits of animation without it looking cheap if you are clever about how you use them. So much mileage out of two run cycles and a bouncing call cycle. All the basics are there though, LOA, weight, timing, its very nice and funny too!
