Blur

For years now I've been thoroughly entertained by the short films, game promos and ads from the Blur animation studio. So it warms my heart to hear that they have won a crack at a feature film. This article in Hollywood Reporter says they will be working on a film adaptation of the comic book The Goon.

I'm sure you have seen much of it before but check out some of Blur's fine work.
Gopher Broke - A Gentleman’s Duel - In the rough
And some of their game promo's
Warhammer - Empire earth III - Transformers

De Blob

A fun and slick Wii game promo. This was made by THQ who have a studio right here in Brisbane. I know they have done some toony stuff in the past, so I wonder if they worked on this one. Looks like it would have been a lot of fun.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village

This is a promotional site for a Nintendo DS game. Its a well put together site and there is some nice animation to be found too.

Get The Glass

This very cool online board game associated with the California Milk Processing Board has been winning awards all over the net. It is full of great little animations. I predict that as band width becomes less and less of a hindrance (all be it at a snails pace here in Australia) we will see more and more interactive 3D on the net.

Also just to show there is still plenty of cool flash stuff being done you should also check out The Adventures Of Hearty Beef Bowl.

The Witcher

Check out the intro for the game, The Witcher.

Hey Everyone! Look Over There! JOBS!!!

HOLLY MANOLLY! Can you believe it? At tafe there are just 6 weeks till the end of year screening and only 8 weeks left in total.

At this time of the year you can't help but think of the future, whos hiring? Well the answer is very encouraging. I just picked some studios off the top of my head an every single one is employing in some way. Its an animation gold rush! Even for those of you who have no love for 3D, some of these studios have jobs for old fationed paper and pencil artist too!

Don't be discouraged if they are senior positions, or they ask for experience. The fact that they are all looking at the same time means they are finding it hard to get the staff they need. If your reel or portfolio is good enough they may just consider giving you a go.

Halo 3

Sometimes less is more, this promo for Halo 3 distinguishes itself from every other game promo I've ever seen by showing us less of the actual game. Can the anticipation of something be sweeter than the actual even? How many game promos have there been now that are full of explosions and fighting, if this had been just another one of those I would have breezed past it without batting an eyelid.

Starwars Wiiiiiiiiiii

This brief article tells of how Krome studios here in Brisbane will be developing a Star Wars game for Wii where you get to wield the controller like a light saber.

As a child Star Wars blew me away, in more recent years I've turned into a major Star Wars cynic, but I have to say this is a cool idea. I think I would have to turn the volume down and make my own sound fx, voom voooom bow voom bow ca ca caaaa voom.

The Engineer

The latest in the Team Fortress Promo series. All Class

Bioshock

A creapy game promo from Microsoft and a company called Eyeballnyc.

Heavenly Sword Again

A few weeks back friend of the ARC MarkO posted a link to a game promo called The Heavenly Sword. Now there is a Part 2, it sure is purdy. There is also a short doco on the making of the game that you can see by clicking here.

As always, big thanks go out to the No Fat Clips blog for the great links.

Heavenly Sword

Friend of the ARC MarkO sent me a link to this very cool cut scene from a game called Heavenly Sword.

Firemint

Have a look at the world of mobile games with this behind the scenes look at Firement studios in Melbourne.

Party Animals

Things just seem to be getting bigger and better for Brisbane's own Krome studio. Check out this interview with their CEO Robert Walsh as they talk about their latest big game for Microsoft. There are pictures and a youtube clip as well.

Half Life 2 Episode 2

hey guys, this is coming out in October..and the reason I'm mentioning it is that it comes with not only Half Life 2 episode 2, but also Team Fortress 2. There's some awesome character designs for this game floating about, so if you get a chance, check them out, it looks great. The animation is looking pretty good too, very cartoony in feel :-) There's a review with a movie clip here, for Half Life 2, and to see some of the designs from Team Fortress 2 including concept pictures, click here . Enjoy!

Games Cinematic

On the weekend I got to catch up with my dear old friend and friend of the ARC Lisa. She is working at Krome these days so naturally we talked about the state of the biz in general and the kinds of things we liked and didn't. I for one would love to see more cinematics. So I thought we would have a look at some.

The Transformers Game
This one is from Blur Studio, who I often post about and think are at the top of the game.

Starcraft 2
I've never seen so many things that couple, insert and interlock in such a short time before. Any Freudians out there would have a field day with this.
Warhammer: Mark of Chaos
Gota love a giant monster with horns. Comeon you just gota.
Warhammer: Age of Reckoning
Back to the good work of Blur Studios. This is my favourite because its got some humor thrown in and the characters have Strong distinct personalities and attitudes. A spoon full of humor and character helps the implausible situation go down in my book.

World Of Warcraft
A classic, and the strongest reason I can see for making this kind animation for a game. I don't play games much, or hang around with gamers much, but I've seen this many times, as soon as it started I recognised it and the game it was for. If I know about it, then that's market penetration.

OK I know these are all macho, violent and shallow pieces of animation (maybe you're cool with that or maybe not), but lets get past our arty farty egos and have a look at where we are. We are in the games capital of Australia and within the context of a game these pieces are animation gold! The characters have personalities, their attitudes can change, there are beginnings, middles, ending, changes in tempo, building tension, and climax's. All of these things can be hard to find in a game and make life more interesting for an animator.

So here is the bummer, even though games are going off in Brisbane there isn't anywhere here (that I can find) that makes this kind of animation. The cinematic's in Australian games are often made up of "in game" animation clips edited together and mixed with dialogue. Why? Well I think the perception is that its not worth the money, and I don't know enough about the biz side of things to dispute that. But I'll tell you one thing, it ain't because of a lack of talent, with the industry the size it is and achieving what it is I'm sure the cream would be able to do this kind of work.

Here is a thought. All the studios are falling over each other to attract experienced animators at the moment, they are all advertising jobs and trying to poach staff from each other. Maybe if a studio had the courage to attempt this sort of thing then the best animators would come running looking for that extra level of job satisfaction.

Transformers

Blur Studio have featured several times on this Blog, here is an interesting clip about the production work they are doing for the cut scenes on the new Transformers game. Like almost everything they do it looks great!

I want a Wii

Check out this cool looking new game coming out on Wii, its called boogy.

The Act - Could this be your future?

I think this is the worlds first interactive traditional animated comedy. Hopefully it will be a big hit, who knows it may lead to a whole new career avenue for traditional animators. Some ex-Disney folk were involved, and there is a nice interview on the site with the animation director.
Click the pic to see the animation.
Thanks to SBIT-Friend Mark Osberg for pointing this out to me

Limbo

If computer games keep heading in this direction, by which I mean a cinematic feel and incredible art direction, then I may be able to find more enthusiasm for what they do. Still can't ever see myself having enough time to sit around playing em though, there's just to much animation to do.
Click the pic for the link
The animation played slow on my computer first time through, but I let it finish and played it again and it went OK the second time.
