Half Life 2 Episode 2

hey guys, this is coming out in October..and the reason I'm mentioning it is that it comes with not only Half Life 2 episode 2, but also Team Fortress 2. There's some awesome character designs for this game floating about, so if you get a chance, check them out, it looks great. The animation is looking pretty good too, very cartoony in feel :-) There's a review with a movie clip here, for Half Life 2, and to see some of the designs from Team Fortress 2 including concept pictures, click here . Enjoy!

Team fortess 2 has gone in a very "Pixar" design style for the characters and props.

Definitely. Those style of shooters usually take themselves so seriously. While something as story-driven as Half-Life 2 needs realism to make it immersive, TF2 seems to be all about fun quick action. So it's good to see them carry that sense of fun over to the art direction and animation.

In one way it gives the game more realism, as each character has a clear personality (especially the super-cool spy), instead of another rehash of "Generic Gruff Marine Soldier #89"

Yeah Team Fortress looks cool as. Following up on Sam’s thoughts, it reminds me of a conversation I was having with student Frank the other day. He is animating a dance at the moment and is using some video footage as reference.

Because with animation your trying to convince people that they are looking at something real with something that’s not, you have to exaggerate some of the real things about movement. Good animation (in this context) isn't a recreation of realistic movement, its a caricature or it.

Ian's right there, if you don't exaggerate it a little, you either end up with an 'uncanny valley' effect, or it just looks bland and all similar in timing.
