Flash Anim
I'm sure quite a few of you will have already seen this, but its so good you should watch it again. It was animated by Bernard Derriman, who was one of the very best animator at Disney (Sydney), in my opinion in the top 3 or 4. This is a classic example of how even if you lean towards limited animation, having a strong understanding of traditional techniques can make it so much better. In terms of how many drawings there are per second this wouldn't be much different to an episode of Pokemon or something, but the inteligent use of line of action, balance, anticipations and cushions makes it far more appealing. I love it.
Subtle little things like the drag on the whiskers are just beautiful. People often jump into flash or even 3D because they think it will save them a lot of work, but doing those little things can make all the difference. Unfortunately they are time consuming in any medium. If you’re happy with making average Flash or 3D animation then it can save you a lot of time, but in my experience, if you really want your animation to stand out then it take a lot of time no matter how you do it. You can look at something like that in two ways, you can let it get you down, or you can relish the challenge. My observations tell me that people who are successful in this biz choose the second.

Any chance of the tafe unblocking youtube? This film clip isnt outstandingly creative... just a rabbit jumping round singing. Anyway people seem to love it so i guess it doesnt matter. A bit of trivia... this animation got runner up in the greatest story never told comp not last year but the year before... twas beaten by adam phillips with prowlies at the river. http://www.tgsnt.com/tgsnt_II/pca/index.html Go Australia!
Hey Clay, I will phone up UNISYS and ask them about unblocking YouTube.
Id say its the character that makes it engaging, Its 90% of the battle, it just goes to show that people will watch an interesting character with no story, but not so much a story with boring characters (just look at almost any 2D feature that flopped) That’s great news for us because as animators our job is character.
Bernard and Adam are old mates, I used to play ping pong with em at lunch times(what a sniveling name dropper I am). I'm sure Adam gave Bernard a hard time about beating him. Adams film probably has a strong combination of story and character, which is ofcourse ideal. I do a post down the track about his site. Also I plan to nag him about doing an In Depth article for me at some stage (just don't want to use up all my contacts in the first few months)
I think Adams site is pretty poorly designed. It might have cool things on it but its complicated and hard to navigate. It would be much better if it was simple. Man im crittial bastard. You did this to me Ian.
I've created a monster!!!!!
